How the car is tested
The car engine computer relays one of a set of codes corresponding to the location of the fault.
Each set of codes is different for every vehicle and requires a database of manufacturers codes for a mechanic to identify.
Faults can occur in one of three systems: the ignition, fuel or emission control system.
